Summary/Recap

1. How do different people show responsibility by being involved in a gossip?

Well, it depends on which is their level of involvement. If they are:
  • Victims: Their responsibility is not to do the same. They need to control the way in which they react, even if what happened hurt a lot, they should try to solve it peacefully talking.
  • Offender: Well, ideally, they shouldn't even start. But once they have started, their job is to end it, by clarifying the information, and telling the people which spread it, what the information really is. They should also apologize with the victim.
  • Spreaders: They should clarify the information before spreading it. Their roleis to spread the information, which they don't know is true, so their responsibility is ideally not to spread anything or at least verify it is true. (preferably not to spread it)

2. In which way is every individual involved in gossip?
There is something that we didn't even know, before starting our exhibition:
To be involved in a gossip doesn’t only mean to start it, or end it, but to transmit it. If you hear something that you are not sure is true, but it is just to juice to keep it to yourself, then you are part of gossip. And any harmless little comment, about somebody else, which may or may not be true, but is negative, can become a gossip, even if you ask your friend not to tell anybody.
There are 4 ways of involvelemnt in a gossip:
  • Victim
  • Spreader
  • Offender
  • Witness
And they all share the responsibility to stop it, as well as to create it.

Face it: people gossip. They always have, and they always will. You can't change that, but you can change what happens when a rumor comes your way.

Decide whether it's hurtful or harmless
When you hear something about someone you always want to pass it on. But before ask yourself these questions:
  • Why do I want to pass this on?
  • Would I want people to know this kind of information about me?
  • How will this person feel if he or she knew this rumor was being spread?
  • Will this rumor reduce this person's status or make him or her excluded from the group?
Your answers will help you figure out the right thing to do.

Make the rumor stop with you
Decide that you don't want to take part in spreading it.

Don't be an audience
When someone comes to you with a rumor, try not to be an audience. This person may want to hurt somebody, or may be after attention or power. Make an effort to say, "I'm not interested in hearing gossip, thanks."

Be a peacemaker
If one of your friends wants to hurt someone else by spreading lies or rumors, Let your friend know that this isn't the right thing to do.

Respect others' privacy
If you don't want other people talking about the personal things in your life, don't do it to others. When you hear personal information about a classmate or friend, try to keep it to yourself, and don't worry about whether it's true or not. If you respect people's privacy, they'll be more likely to do the same for you.

Get the facts
Most of the time, you should try to ignore gossip and rumors. But if you hear a rumor about something important, and it doesn't sound too crazy, ask the kid being gossiped about if is true.

Three questions before gossip...

These are three filter questions which every person should ask themselves or others to avoid gossip.
  • Am I sure what I´m going to say is true?
  • Is it good or bad about a person?
  • Is it ussefull to the other people?
Once we´ve answered this questions and at least 1 answer is: YES .. then go ahead, but if non of them is, then why tell it at all?

Usefulness
This information complemented our action, because we were able to show the kids a way of preventing gossip, which are the three questions. It opened us doors to ther investigations like the different characteristics og information like:
Trueness
Godness
Usefulness
